Translations are not all the same. Every content is different and every file is translated for a specific reason, for a final purpose. Four different formulas are at your disposition to match your English to French translation needs, your turnaround time expectations and the type of content of your files.

How the discount is calculated

The discount per word is calculated according to SDL Trados 2015 file analysis. This analysis includes file repetitions, cross-file repetitions, fuzzy matches and any matches resulting from a previous translation memory. The detailed file analysis will be included in your quote for your convenience and reference.

Your English to French translation quote will include a table detailing the results of your file analysis similar to the following one:

quote french translation sample

Why aren’t the repetitions 100% discounted?

Let’s have a look at this simple example.
This file to translate from English to French contains 78 words, spread in 12 sentences, also called “segments“.
2 segments are repeating:

  • Please click here to open the file (7 words)
  • Light (1 word)

The other segments are not repeating, but are highly similar “fuzzy matches

As you can easily understand with this example, a repeating text doesn’t necessarily mean that the meaning is the same. Its translation can therefore change according to its context.

These repetitions still require attention, as it is important to make sure that they’re real repetitions. It is not because the word or the sentence is the same in English that it will be in French or in any other language.

Now let’s have a look at the file analysis for this example

78 words at $0.05/word should cost $3.90.

It’s not the case here because the sentences are highly similar. The translation can be done quicker. If I can do it quicker, why would you pay the full price for every word?

With the discounts in place, the final quote is $2.76.

(3.9-2.76)/3.9 = 0.292

Congrats! You just saved 29.2% on your translation.
